What is Hydroxycitric Acid? Hydroxycitric acid is an herbal extract found in the fruits of the genus Garcinia. It is typically an extract of the rinds of Garcinia cambogia fruit, also called Brindle berry. The acid is highly unstable and therefore is extracted as a salt (usually as a Calcium or Potassium salt). Hydroxycitric acid supplements are available in many forms, including tablets, capsules, powders, snack bars and chewing gum.

Brief description : Hydroxycitric acid is the principal acid in the fruits of Garcinia cambogia and makes up to 16% of the content of the dried fruit. It is included in many fat loss supplements claiming to increase fat burning.

Hydroxycitric acid (Garcinia)

History : HCA is the most impressive Supplement in years and is possibly the hottest nutritional aid to hit the weight control market ever. After learning its unique effect, Hoffman-La Roche in 1960 began number of research projects and received a patent in 1960. Company later abandoned its efforts because of difficulty they perceived in mass marketing this compound.

Manufacturing Process :
We produced HCA in the following two process.

Contemporary Standardized Methods: -

  • HCA concentrate prepared from Garcinia rind including 23 - 54% free HCA, 6-20% lactone of HCA, 0.001-8% citric acid, and 32-70% water; US Patent 5,656,314.

  • Enriching HCA: a salt-free water extract of Garcinia rind is loaded onto an anion exchange column, eluted with a metal hydroxide for release of HCA. This is treated with a cation exchange column to make free HCA a free acid; US Patent 5,536,516.

  • Appetite suppression with HCA from Garcinia fruit; US Patent 5,783,603.

    Folk Methods: -
Garcitric gold contains 51% HCA plus flavanoids and is stabilized as 90% free acid to 10% lactone in demineralized water; 15 drops=1 gm powdered salt form giving 1000 mg of HCA.

Pharmacology : HCA on the other hand, works via peripheral mechanism to promote weight loss and assist the body's natural cycle in the liver and elsewhere, there by influencing the metabolism of calories.

HCA works by: - ATP citrate lyase converts, excess calories from food into fat for storage. HCA binds to enzyme ATP-citrate lyase making it ineffective. If ATP citrate lyase is not present the fat production in body is stopped. So no more extra fat storage in body & when body need energy the stored fat gets burned. The calories which are diverted from fat storage got to end some where so glycogen are product and this gets stored in skeletal muscles and the liver.

Appetite Suppressant: - A reduction in appetite is never the most important part of fat loss, but certainly can make things easier. In numerous studies, HCA has been shown to reduce the appetite of animal consuming it. HCA'S control of appetite seems to be the result of all the stored glycogen which is produced. That is when glycogen rises, glucoreceptors in the liver are stimulated. As regulator, these glucoreceptors send signal to brain via the Vagus nerve; against a very natural way to alter physiology and promote weight loss.

  • Double Action : HCA increase glycogen synthesis and decreased fatty acid synthesis at same time. This is unheard of in normal nutritional process. Dallas Clounalre, Ph.D., nutritional author and consultant in Berkeley, California says" HCA appears to accomplish a feat not normally found in the body. It promotes full glycogen storage and at the same time it signals the kreb's cycle to initiate beta-oxidation by slowing the glycolytic pathway.

Phytochemistry : Garcinia cambogia fruit have been reported to have around 20- 30% of (-) hydroxy citric acid lactone along with tracer amount of citric acid, addition of pectin have also been reported. Camboginol and cambogin have also being identified.

    HCA (Garcinia)

    Actions :
Hydroxycitric acid is a putative antiobesity agent.

    Uses :

  • Animal studies have shown that HCA can suppress appetite and thereby encourage weight loss. It is thought to work by interfering with the body’s ability to produce and store fat.

  • HCA increases the ability of the liver and muscles to synthesize and store glycogen, thereby suppressing appetite.

  • HCA improves Glucose Metabolism.

  • HCA act as an Appetite.
